The nature of the photographic process

"The nature of the photographic process — it is about failure. Most everything I do doesn’t quite make it. The failures can be intelligent; nothing ventured, nothing gained. Hopefully you’re risking failure every time you make a frame. I learned a long time ago to trust my instincts. If I’m at the viewfinder and I know that picture, why take it? I’ll do something to change it, which is often the reason why I may tilt the camera or fool around in various ways. You don’t learn anything from repeating what you know … so I keep trying to make the process uncertain."Garry Winogrand

This is a quotation you would do well to read at least twice, I think.

Gary Winogrand
When I read it, it reminds me that I need to take more chances (in my photos and in my art) … and be willing to fail. Especially if it means I could fail.

Believe this. Your willingness to take risks will make you interesting. So stop playing it safe.

Fail often enough, and you might actually come to amount to something.
