Pretty Is Nice. Puzzles Are Often Better.

— Something I love about conceptual photo artistry is how seldom the emphasis is on simply showing us something pretty.

So much of what makes a conceptual piece WORK is the cleverness of the artist’s idea or the mystery the artist can embed within the piece.

The more we are made to wonder, ponder, THINK — the better.

If you create photo artistry yourself, and if you’re interested in conceptual fine art, I encourage you to go back through some of your past artwork and see if you can take something rather simple and pretty . . . and layer in some additional content that might make us linger somewhat longer over the piece, as we try to figure out what it might mean.

(What it might mean to you; what it might mean to us.)

The most exciting art always seems to in some way tap into our curiosity.

Make use of that.  Make that a deliberate intention.

What might you layer into the piece you’re working on right now . . . so as to give us more to find, more to ponder?

PS:  This extraordinary artwork in this post is by AWAKE artist Gitama Day. The main image is titled “Steampunk Fashionista,” which makes for a great example of a composition infused with ideas we can linger over, a character capable of capturing our imagination.  Your ideas or clues might be far more subtle of course.  So try subtle . . . but also see if you can have some fun with it as well, being blatant with your material, as if to say, “Let’s see if you can figure this out!”
